Paragraph 1: Look Back (L)

During my clinical experience, I witnessed a significant patient care scenario where I assisted a patient undergoing hip replacement surgery. I found this event necessary since it shed light on the significance of centered attention according to the patients and the significance of good communication in the recovery procedure.

Paragraph 2: Examine the Experience (E)

It was among the nursing practices that I observed in the hospital’s orthopedic unit during my training. I supported the nurse in keeping track of the patient’s health status, including blood pressure and oxygen saturation level, gave a painkiller, and helped with exercises. I grasped the patient, trying to convey feelings about pain and concern about mobility and what may be causing additional anxiety by their family members. At first, I worried about my performance and contributions toward the team, especially the nurse; seeing how the nurse approaches a patient and addresses their concern helped calm me down. Looking back now, I feel much more equipped to deal with patients during stressful moments.

Paragraph 3: Analyze and Appraise the Situation (A)

The main concern in this case was the patient’s perception of possible pain after the surgery and ability to move, which is quite comprehensible for anyone who went through the operative procedure. The nursing paradigms were evident. The nursing approach focuses on providing care and comfort to patients, addressing their emotional reactions, and creating a welcoming environment that promotes recovery and health by effectively managing severe pain. Paternal decision-making and critical analysis were crucial when evaluating the patient’s level of pain and discomfort and deciding the correct course of action. As I watched the nurse apply Caputi’s model, I observed the use of clinical judgment components at each stage (Walwema, 2021). Furthermore, the person-centered approach was visible, as when the nurse talked to the patient, she tried to calm the client down, stemming from her fear. The College of Nurses of Ontario Entry-to-Practice Competencies indicated that the nurse-provided caregivers and advocacy work well. I came across an article on postoperative pain management in the peer-reviewed literature that supported the notion of patient-specific care plans similar to what I have observed clinically (Gómez et al., 2022). The article mentioned such measures, emphasizing the importance of increased nursing involvement in preventive pain control.

Paragraph 4: Review and Revise (R)

From this experience, I identified that communication and empathy are critical when practicing as a nurse, particularly when handling acutely ill patients. If I could do it again, I would have addressed more conversational turns to the patient to determine his worries and put them to rest. This has allowed me to cultivate an understanding of patient-centered care in its entirety.

Paragraph 5: New Approaches (N)

In the subsequent time, it will be possible to use such knowledge and apply the practice of active patient participation in care planning so that they can be heard and proceed with confidence. For instance, I will engage patients with questions that will help them express their fears and preferences to establish rapport. Effective time management, active learning, resource utilization, critical thinking, strong study habits, seeking support, teamwork, and self-care are not merely instruments for academic achievement; they are fundamental competencies that promote personal development and professional accomplishment. I will always continue to update myself with pain management techniques, giving my patients the best solutions that fit them and making sure to engage with the patients accordingly.
